It’s getting exciting around. Blackberries and muscadines are growing like crazy. Compost is being made, and sunflowers are popping up all around. The sunflowers are from black oil sunflower seed that I sprout for my chickens.

Nature’s Fruit
What’s better than fresh fruit. Free fresh fruit provided by nature. “Wild” fruit is well adapted to your local climate, and is one important component of Permaculture. Muscadies are North America’s native grapes, and can make a great wine. Jams and jellies can be made from black berries and muscadines. I plan to encourage these two fruits to grow, but how I want it to. I’m thinking a food hedge along the perimeter of my property for some security. And it’s FREE!!!

Compost
A little update on my compost pile. The pile consist of grass clipping, leaves and shredded cardboard. It’s design allows for easy turning, and wetting it down. Also the presence of earth worms and pill bug let’s me know that its working.

Uses for Grass Clippings.
I use my new lawn mower that has a bagger. I love the mower with the bagger because how easy it is to collect the grass clippings. Grass clippings are great for rabbit and goat food. Chickens also will eat the grass clippings. You can also spread out the clippings to save them for hay to store for winter. AND the clippings that don’t go to feed make great compost.
